“What I particularly like about the new BMW F 450 RR is that it’s light, responsive and very precise to ride. That’s exactly how a supersport bike should be, in my view,” said Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, in the official press release on 15 October. “It’s great fun on country roads and performs just as well on the racetrack. At the same time, it clearly embodies the DNA of our RR models. For me, that makes it the perfect introduction to the world of BMW RR.”
The new BMW F 450 RR for the 48 PS class was developed as a standalone supersport bike within the BMW F 450 model family. Its design is based on the current styling of the S 1000 RR. “The pronounced nose-down, tail-up stance, the typical RR flyline and the winglets create a strong forward-facing orientation,” says BMW. “Asymmetrical fairing side panels, gills on the right-hand side and the split face add distinctive touches and underline the unique interpretation of the RR DNA. The LED headlight with the RR-typical daytime running light signature defines its distinctive appearance.”
80 per cent of the available torque is delivered at 3,000 rpm
At the heart of the new BMW F 450 RR is the newly developed two-cylinder in-line engine – first used in the F 450 GS – featuring fuel injection and an under-floor stainless steel silencer. According to BMW, this engine has been tuned to meet the demands of a supersport bike for use in the F 450 RR. The engine delivers 35 kW (48 PS) at 8,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 43 Nm at 6,750 rpm. As early as 3,000 rpm, 80 per cent of the available torque is on tap – this ensures strong acceleration at low revs. High-tech materials and optimised internal friction are said to enable these performance figures with a displacement of exactly 420 ccm.
Crankshaft with 135-degree crankpin offset plus balance shaft
The engine meets the requirements of the Euro 5+ standard, with fuel consumption expected to be 3.8 litres per 100 km. With its 14-litre fuel tank, the F 450 RR is expected to have a range of over 350 km. The service interval is the standard 10,000 km for BMW Motorrad. The crankshaft with a 135-degree crankpin offset and a balance shaft is designed to combine a distinctive power delivery with smooth running and low vibration levels. Magnesium covers for the clutch and gearbox also help to reduce weight.
Four-piston brake by Brembo
On the front wheel of this lightweight sports bike, deceleration is provided by a floating single-disc brake featuring a Brembo four-piston monobloc fixed caliper and a 310 mm brake disc. At the rear, a single-disc brake with a floating ByBre single-piston caliper and a 240 mm diameter disc is fitted. The new BMW F 450 RR comes with BMW Motorrad ABS Pro as standard. The system enables ABS-assisted braking whilst leaning, thereby enhancing safety even when cornering. According to BMW, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) offers greater safety when braking in difficult situations by preventing accidental throttle activation.
