BMW star Marco Wittmann wins a thriller at the Nürburgring

Marco Wittmann’s first win of the season in the DTM. The two-time DTM champion won a thrilling and dramatic second race at the Nürburgring following a fierce three-way battle for the lead.

Second place went to Tom Kalender in the Landgraf Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3. The 18-year-old made his first DTM podium appearance. He finished 0.517 seconds behind the winning BMW.

Thomas Preining rounded off the podium. This sees him back in the title race in earnest, as he is now just one point behind Maro Engel.

An in-team collision involving two Mercedes-AMG cars occurred at the second corner. Championship leader Maro Engel collided with Lucas Auer in the Landgraf Motorsport car, spinning the Tyrolean driver round, who then also collided with Schubert Motorsport driver Kelvin van der Linde. All three drivers were forced out of the race, their cars all suffering severe damage. The safety car was deployed onto the track. Due to the neutralisation, the race was extended by two laps. In an interview, Engel took responsibility for the accident.

Ben Dörr retired during the first pit stop window! Although the McLaren driver was in second place, the right-front wheel had not been tightened properly after the mandatory pit stop and consequently slipped off the track at the first corner. The safety car was deployed onto the track after the pit stop window.
