Marco Wittmann on pole position – Lucas Auer crashes heavily

Marco Wittmann has secured pole position for the first DTM race at the Sachsenring. With a time of 1:17.627 minutes, Wittmann clinched the top spot on the grid in the Schubert Motorsport BMW M4 GT3. This is Wittmann’s first pole position of the year.

Thomas Preining in the Manthey Porsche takes second place, putting him at the top of the DTM standings! Preining was 0.126 seconds off the BMW works driver’s fastest time.

Jules Gounon, in the WINWARD Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, completes the top three.

With 2 minutes and 42 seconds remaining in qualifying, Lucas Auer crashed heavily into the barrier at the exit of Turn 8 in his Landgraf Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3. Auer reported over the radio that something on his car had broken beforehand, which was thought to be the wheel hub. The session was interrupted by a red flag. For Auer, who currently lies fourth in the championship standings, this is yet another setback in the title race. He will have to start the race from the back of the grid.
