After high-speed crash at Monza: What was worrying Charles Leclerc

For Charles Leclerc, the race on the high-speed Monza circuit was over in a flash. As early as the second lap, the Ferrari star crashed into the tyre barriers at the Parabolica and was subsequently taken to the track medical centre for a check-up. The crash brought out the red flags, and even before the race resumed, Ferrari gave the all-clear.

An initial examination at the medical centre revealed no serious injuries, according to the Maranello-based team. However, the crash did have some consequences, as Leclerc later explained on camera. “My neck was fine, it was just that my vision in my right eye was a bit blurred. But everything’s fine now,” reported the 28-year-old.

“That was what worried me the most,” admitted the Monegasque driver. “But that’s sorted now. And of course it hurts a bit here and there, but that’s normal after a crash like that,” added the driver, who is currently fifth in the World Championship. “Looking back, I should obviously have been a bit more careful,” he admitted when asked. “We’ll be carrying out a few more tests tonight and tomorrow to make absolutely sure I’m fit for next week’s race in Madrid. It should be fine, but it’s always better to play it safe.”

Speaking about the crash, the nine-time Grand Prix winner said: “The car felt a bit odd right from the first lap. I pressed the accelerator, then lifted off and pressed it down again. I wanted to do the same on the second lap. I don’t know, it all felt a bit off. We’ll have to take a closer look at it now.”
