Ferrari ace Charles Leclerc explains: How he’ll get the Tifosi cheering at Monza

The home race at Monza is a very special World Championship event for Ferrari. Nowhere else do so many passionate Tifosi gather to cheer on the world’s oldest Grand Prix team as they do at the Royal Park. It is therefore all the more important for every team member to shine on the high-speed Italian circuit.

However, expectations within the team weren’t as high this year, as Leclerc revealed after the qualifying session, which he finished with the fourth-fastest lap. The Monegasque said: “We expected we’d struggle a bit on this track anyway. But of course it’s still disappointing to have finished only fourth.”

“Because at Monza we want to do as well as possible – that’s what we aim for at every circuit. But of course we’re hoping that, with the support of the Tifosi, we can squeeze a bit more performance out of the car in the race. It’s always a very special working environment for us, and I’m really looking forward to the Grand Prix,” the 28-year-old went on to explain.

Leclerc also revealed that a lot hadn’t gone to plan in qualifying: “Unfortunately, a lot went wrong, and not everything is shown on TV. But things were a bit too difficult in the pits this time. We had a lot of problems, and that was the case throughout the final practice session. And we certainly paid a high price for that at the end of Q3.”

When asked how he could still turn things around in the race and make the Tifosi happy, the driver currently fifth in the World Championship said: “We need a good start. I think our race pace is pretty strong. I’m just a bit sceptical when it comes to our speed on the straights, as that could leave us somewhat vulnerable there. I hope we can use our speed through the corners to make up places. But it’s certainly going to be a tough race.”
