George Russell (Mercedes) brushes off the boos with a smile! Announcement for 2027

At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Mercedes driver George Russell finished a creditable second after starting from second on the grid. Nevertheless, he wasn’t really in the mood to laugh afterwards. His team-mate and rival Kimi Antonelli won ahead of him – even though he had started the race from 19th on the grid due to an engine penalty. A humiliation for Russell, despite scoring 18 points.

Boos on the podium

During the trophy presentation on the podium, George Russell was then booed by the Italian (Antonelli) fans. Russell didn’t let it bother him, as he later said: “When you’re racing in someone else’s home country, that’s to be expected. I took it in my stride with a grin.”

Russell to get his own grandstand at Silverstone

Russell will have all the more to smile about at his own home race in 2027: next season at Silverstone, he’ll have his very own fan stand for the first time, the ‘GRandstand’ (not a typo, but a play on Russell’s initials, GR, in the English word for grandstand).

Russell and the Silverstone circuit announced this after the Monza race – a welcome boost for the Englishman. Russell: “The grandstand is here at the exit of Turn 1. So you can see Turns 1 and 2 and the good overtaking spot from Turn 3 to 4.”

Lando Norris has also had his own grandstand at Silverstone for some time now, the ‘Landostand’. Lewis Hamilton even has his own straight, the Hamilton Straight – which, incidentally, leads straight to the ‘GRandstand’.
