Two wheels meets four wheels! This coming Formula 1 race weekend in Austin, Texas, will also see some special guests from the world of MotoGP taking to the track. As part of a joint initiative between Formula 1 and MotoGP, a showcase event during the F1 weekend will also feature Superbike World Champion Nicolo Bulega (Ducati) as well as test riders Dani Pedrosa (KTM), Andrea Dovizioso (Yamaha) and Lorenzo Savadori (Trackhouse Aprilia) will be on the track in Austin.
MotoGP demonstration laps at the Formula 1 weekend in Austin
They will be completing demonstration laps on the Circuit of the Americas on Saturday morning local time – which is in the evening here in Central Europe (6.40 pm) – ahead of the third free practice session in Formula 1. From 23 to 25 October, the events in Austin (the US Grand Prix in Formula 1) and Phillip Island (the Australian Grand Prix in MotoGP) will take place simultaneously. Consequently, the regular MotoGP riders will naturally not be present in Austin – but a future MotoGP star will be.
The background to this initiative: Liberty Media, owner of Formula 1 since 2017, is now also the majority shareholder in MotoGP. This is the first joint event to take place as part of a race weekend. Fittingly, both racing series hold their respective US Grands Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin: F1 in October and MotoGP in April.
Dani Pedrosa said: “It’s always something special to ride a MotoGP bike at the Circuit of the Americas, one of the world’s most legendary race tracks. The United States Grand Prix is a truly unique and special event on the F1 calendar, attracting huge crowds and offering a great opportunity to give fans a taste of what makes MotoGP so exciting. You have to experience the speed, the sound and the power of these motorbikes live, and I’m looking forward to sharing that with everyone in Austin.”
Nicolo Bulega, who is currently shining in the Superbike World Championship but will next be competing for VR46 Ducati in MotoGP, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase MotoGP in front of one of the largest crowds in global motorsport. The atmosphere at COTA is always incredible, and it will be a special experience to ride a MotoGP bike in front of so many fans. MotoGP bikes are like nothing else, and hopefully the laps will show just how spectacular our sport is. We’re looking forward to putting on a great show and giving the fans a taste of what they can expect when I return to Austin with MotoGP in 2027.”
