Steiner’s bold prediction: Will Aston Martin catch up with the Williams team?

The Aston Martin team has had a difficult season so far. The Silverstone-based team got off to a rocky start with unexpected problems, and it was already clear during pre-season testing that the green race car would need significant improvements to keep up with the competition. Their track record reflects this.

Formula 1 veteran Fernando Alonso had to endure five retirements before finishing tenth in Monaco and securing his team’s first World Championship point. That remains the only one so far, as Lance Stroll’s record to date is even more dismal – the Canadian has only managed to finish four times in the eleven Grands Prix – and has not scored a single point.

Williams with no chance of further points?

At the most recent race at the Hungaroring, however, the duo were able to see clear progress, even though they came away empty-handed with 13th (Stroll) and 14th (Alonso) places. The reason for their improved form was a comprehensive upgrade package put together by the team led by star designer Adrian Newey. Engine partner Honda also announced an upgrade for the power unit.

That is why Günther Steiner is confident that Aston Martin will step it up again in the second half of the season. On the ‘The Red Flags’ podcast, the former Haas team principal even ventures the bold prediction that the Greens will overtake the Williams team. A glance at the World Championship standings reveals that Aston Martin currently has one point, whilst Williams has eleven. Steiner comments: “I believe they can do it, because I think they’ll have a good chance once the revised engine arrives. There will still be enough races to pick up a point or two here and there to reach eleven points. And I don’t think Williams will score any more points.”
