A V8 comeback in Formula 1? Max Verstappen is practising patience

The idea of bringing V8 engines back to Formula 1 in the future has found favour not only with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and many fans. A number of drivers have also spoken out in favour of it. Among them is Max Verstappen, who is one of the fiercest critics of the current power units.

The Red Bull Racing star did not hold back with his criticism at the start of the year, describing the new Formula 1 as ‘Formula E on steroids’. Many of the Dutchman’s colleagues also voiced their criticism, and the decision-makers responded accordingly. They have decided to gradually shift the power balance between internal combustion engines and electric power back in favour of the former.

In addition, the idea of reintroducing V8 engines has resurfaced – thanks to sustainable fuels, these are said to remain compatible with the top flight’s sustainability targets. Verstappen has now come to terms with the fact that the engine regulations cannot be changed overnight. He explained: “I have accepted the situation we find ourselves in. Personally, of course, I’m not happy about it.”

“Following the discussions I’ve had with representatives from Formula 1 and the FIA, I’m prepared to accept this, partly because minor improvements have been agreed for the coming years and the door remains open for a possible return to V8s. At the moment, however, it’s not exactly thrilling,” continued the 28-year-old exceptional talent.

Verstappen also emphasised that he still loves racing. “It’s still a Formula 1 car, and on some circuits the current cars perform better than on others. And of course we know that there is room for improvement in some areas. I hope that we can capitalise on this, at least in part, over the course of the year,” he added.
