Euro Moto Nürburgring: Geiger moves closer to the SSP title with a double victory

Dirk Geiger secured his fifth win of the season in the Euro Moto Supersport class in the first race at the Nürburgring on Saturday, thereby further extending his lead in the overall standings. There was no showdown with his title rival Daniel Blin, but it was an entertaining race nonetheless.

The order was quickly established after the start: Dirk Geiger (Apreco-Yamaha) in front of his team-mate Lennox Lehmann, with Daniel Blin (Automarket AF Racing Team) in third. It was particularly clear that Lehmann was determined to secure his first win of the season. The Dresden-based rider was keen to finally break his two-year winless streak. However, in Geiger he faced the toughest opponent he could have imagined. By the tenth lap, it was clear that his plans would come to nothing. Geiger had once again extended the gap – which had since shrunk considerably – to his two pursuers and shone with personal best times in the individual sectors.

Now Blin had to act if he wanted to keep his title hopes alive. He managed to overtake Lehmann, but it was too late to mount a challenge on Geiger. Firstly, the Mannheim-born rider had pulled four-tenths of a second clear once again in the closing stages. Secondly, Blin ran into trouble with his Ducati coming out of the bends. Several slips in the final three laps didn’t exactly make the chase any easier. With that, the order was set: Dirk Geiger won the first race at the Öhlins Euro Moto event at the Nürburgring ahead of Daniel Blin and Lennox Lehmann.

Race 2: Two is better than one

The second Supersport race at the Öhlins Euro Moto event at the Nürburgring also turned into a triumph for Dirk Geiger, whilst title rival Daniel Blin suffered another setback. Geiger’s team-mate Lennox Lehmann played a key role in this.

As expected, Dirk Geiger, Lennox Lehmann (Team Apreco-Yamaha) and Daniel Blin (Automarket AF Racing Team) had taken the lead straight from the start. Marvin Siebdrath (MCA Racing), guest rider Maximilian Kofler (Eder Racing) and Luca Göttlicher (LJ Racing) lined up one after the other, with things getting rather tight at times. Max Stauffer (Team Apreco-Yamaha), Luca de Vleeschauwer (Team SWPN) and Filip Feigl (Eder Racing) were at times riding side by side on the track.

Lehmann holds his own

By the halfway point, Geiger had pulled away from the field on his Yamaha YZF-R9 and was edging ever closer to his second consecutive victory in the Eifel. Lehmann, in second place, fended off Blin’s attacks. The 24-year-old Pole’s hope that Lehmann might suffer a similar collapse to yesterday’s did not materialise, but the final lap of their battle had spectators on the edge of their seats. Multiple changes of position took the battle for the podium places to a fever pitch. After 16 laps, Lehmann was 0.094 seconds ahead. The fact that Geiger had won so convincingly rankled with him. A 3.148-second lead is no small feat.

Decision at Hockenheim – anything is possible

At least Lehmann had moved up one place compared with the previous day. By finishing ahead of Blin, he also helped his team-mate pull a few more points clear of the Ducati rider in the overall standings. Geiger had arrived in the Eifel as the leader with a 13-point advantage; he left with 27.
