Aragon, qualifying: Ortola breaks Moreira’s record, Alonso misses out on Q2!

The 29 riders in the Moto2 World Championship were greeted by midsummer conditions on Friday as they prepared for Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s Grand Prix. In FP1 on Friday morning, MSI rider Ivan Ortola was the fastest. The Spaniard completed a lap in 1:50.265 minutes.

At the start of qualifying, the times were slower than in FP1. Gresini rider Alonso Lopez topped the timesheets after ten minutes with a lap of 1:50.420, later improving to 1:50.380. The usual battle for times to secure direct qualification for Q2 began in the final third of the qualifying session.

Senna Agius kicked off the chase for the fastest times

Ten minutes before the session ended, IntactGP rider Senna Agius came close to Lopez’s fastest time and moved into second place, 0.021 seconds behind. One lap later, Agius took the lead and set the fastest lap time of the Moto2 race weekend so far with a time of 1:50.009 minutes. He was less than a tenth of a second off Diogo Moreira’s Moto2 record (1:49.940 minutes).

Dani Holgado beat Moreira’s record shortly afterwards, but could only hold onto the lead briefly, as Ivan Ortola also improved on his time. The clock stopped at 1:49.791 minutes. Ortola put in another strong lap and missed his own best time by just 0.011 seconds.

David Alonso made a mistake on his final attempt

Before his final attempt, David Alonso was outside the top 14 and under pressure to improve. Otherwise, he would have had to compete in Q1 on Saturday. The future MotoGP rider failed to deliver and could not move beyond 18th place. As a result, he must compete in the first qualifying session on Saturday.

Ortola’s time remained unchallenged in the final minute. The Spaniard set the day’s fastest time and comfortably qualified for Q2. Dani Holgado followed just 0.058 seconds behind. Senna Agius held on to third place. Alonso Lopez led the session for much of the way but was pushed back to fourth place in the closing stages. Celestino Vietti moved up to fifth place in the final minute.

Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez finished the qualifying session in sixth place, 0.513 seconds off the pace. Daniel Munoz, Alex Escrig, Collin Veijer and Izan Guevara rounded off the top 10. Ayumu Sasaki, Barry Baltus, Angel Piqueras and Taiyo Furusato also qualified directly for Q2.

Star-studded Q1 on Saturday afternoon

Silverstone winner Filip Salac narrowly missed out on the top 14 and must compete in Q1 on Saturday. In the first qualifying session, the Czech rider will face David Alonso, Moto3 World Champion Jose-Antonio Rueda, former Supersport World Champion Adrian Huertas and Moto2 veterans Aron Canet, Tony Arbolino and Deniz Öncü.

Q1 of the Moto2 World Championship at Aragon starts on Saturday at 1.40 pm. The second session begins at 2.05 pm.
