Intact GP: High tension in the riders’ world championship – a penalty shoot-out in the team standings

The battle in Moto2 remains fiercely close. One thing is certain: the riders’ world championship title will not be decided in Qatar just yet. The situation is different in the teams’ standings, however. Intact GP can clinch the title.

In the Moto3 World Championship, the title has already been decided. Back in Lombok, Apsar protégé Maximo Quiles was hailed as champion of the smallest-capacity class. The World Championship in the premier class is still up for grabs, but the outcome is all but decided. Following two podium finishes at Sepang, whilst his closest title rival Jorge Martin failed to keep pace, Spain’s MotoGP icon Marc Marquez could be crowned world champion in the top class for the eighth time as early as this coming weekend.

The situation is different in the Moto2 World Championship. With 75 championship points still up for grabs at Losail, Portimão and Valencia, but only a 3.5-point gap between the Spaniards Manuel González and Izan Guevara, the title will certainly not be decided here just yet. Looking ahead to their final head-to-head clash, everything points to the title being decided at the final race in Valencia. At Sepang, Guevara and Gonzalez were neck and neck.

The Pramac rider finished in fourth place, just ahead of Gonzalez, thereby chipping away at his points lead by a further two points. Whilst the first half of the season was clearly dominated by Gonzalez – after the Assen GP, his lead stood at a solid 57.5 points – the second half of the campaign belonged to Izan Guevara.

Looking ahead to the Doha Desert Grand Prix, however, the odds are once again in Manuel Gonzalez’s favour. The 24-year-old from Madrid has finished on the podium twice in the last three years and has never finished lower than fifth. By contrast, the World Championship challenger’s record is not worth mentioning – zero points and one retirement over the same period. The latest comparison among manufacturers also points to Kalex rider Gonzalez; in 2025, the first Boscuscuro, ridden by Vietti, finished in 7th place.

The situation is clear-cut in the Moto2 team championship. Despite the Aspar team’s one-two finish at Sepang, the Spanish outfit, with David Alonso and Dani Holgado, trails Liqui Moly Dnyavolt Intact GP by 61.5 points with three races to go. If the team managed by Jürgen Lingg leaves Losai with a 51-point lead, the Team World Championship is secured.

To put it another way: if an Intact rider does not lose more than ten points to an Aspar rider in CF Moto colours at the Qatar Grand Prix, another milestone in the team’s history will have been reached. In 2023, the Moto3 squad under Peter Öttl triumphed with Collin Veijer and Ayumu Sasaki; this coming Sunday, the Moto2 squad with Manuel Gonzalez and Senna Agius could follow suit.
