Moto3, qualifying: David Almansa 1st – A moment of panic for Brian Uriarte

New Zealander Cormac Buchanan suffered a broken right ankle in his crash during the Moto3 race at Aragon. It is currently unclear when the 20-year-old will be able to get back on his KTM. At Misano, Buchanan will be replaced by Marcos Uriarte in the Boe Motorsports team.

In the German Intact team, 18-year-old Rookies Cup rider David Gonzalez is once again standing in for the injured David Munoz.

In FP1 at Misano, Australian Joel Kelso set the fastest time of 1:46.033. In second place: Leo Rammerstorfer! Until shortly before the end, it looked as though the Austrian would finish the session in first place, but then Kelso was half a second faster. Nevertheless, it was a strong showing from the Sic58 rider. Incidentally, World Championship leader Maximo Quiles did not take to the drying track on Friday morning.

FP1 will be followed by the Moto3 class’s free practice session on Friday. The aim here is to go straight through to Qualifying 2, which only the fastest 14 riders manage to do. The remaining riders must take part in Q1 on Saturday, from which the top four then progress to Q2.

At the start of the timed practice session, it was pleasantly warm at 24 degrees Celsius. The sky was cloudy, but it was dry.

The riders took to the track on time at 1.15 pm. Hakim Danish set the first notable fastest time of 1:42.990 mins. By way of comparison, David Alonso had set the Moto3 lap record at Misano in 2024 with a time of 1:40.184 mins.

After seven minutes, Intact rider David Almansa took the lead with a time of 1:42.050. Danish responded by setting a time of 1:41.936. Almansa also improved his time and retook the lead with 1:41.564.

The top five after ten minutes: Almansa, Perrone, Fernandez, Cruces and Danish. Rammerstorfer was in 26th place at this stage. Shortly afterwards, Almansa lowered his best time to 1:41.413 minutes. Brian Uriarte (KTM Ajo) was now third.

Almansa was the fastest rider on the track so far – he improved his best time to 1:41.069.

The order halfway through the session: Almansa, Perrone, Esteban, Uriarte and Fernandez.

The final push for fast lap times came in the closing minutes. With nine minutes remaining, Joel Kelso set the second-fastest time. World Championship leader Quiles was only 15th at that point.

Shortly afterwards, Quiles surged forward to sixth place. Almansa was still at the top.

Five minutes before the end of the session, Almansa set the first time under 1:41 minutes with a lap of 1:40.912 min. Then Brian Uriarte had a highside in Turn 14. He was lucky not to be run over by the riders behind him. He was able to get straight back on his feet and sprint to his KTM, which was lying in the gravel trap.

The final three minutes were frantic on the track. Alvaro Carpe braked too hard in Turn 8 but stayed on his bike.

On his final lap, Almansa clocked a time of 1:40.767! Quiles moved up to fourth place. His team-mate Marco Morelli was third. Then Rico Salmela surged forward into fourth place.

At the very last moment, Quiles set the third-fastest time.

The big loser of the session: Alvaro Carpe, who finished only 18th and must compete in Q1 on Saturday.
