Jack Miller resigned: “Don’t want to quit – know that’s how it’ll be”

After the 2014 season, Jack Miller was promoted straight from Moto3 to MotoGP, where the Australian has since contested over 200 races for Honda, Ducati, KTM and Yamaha. He enjoyed his best years with the Ducati factory team in 2021 and 2022, finishing fourth and fifth in the World Championship respectively; it was during this time that he also secured three of his four victories in the premier class.

It has been clear for months: 2026 will be Miller’s final MotoGP season. His seat at Prima Pramac Yamaha will be taken by home-grown talent Izan Guevara (22), who finished second in the Moto2 World Championship ahead of Silverstone, and no other team is interested in the 31-year-old.

‘Jackass’ is trying to secure a place in the World Superbike Championship for 2027, but his only chances of a ride there are with the Yamaha and Honda works teams – and as things stand, these are purely theoretical.

This is because a place in Honda’s factory squad will only become available if the planned satellite team goes ahead and Somkiat Chantra is placed there – the Thai rider has a valid contract with the Honda Racing Corporation for 2027. And Yamaha’s Superbike management are happy with their current quartet. Andrea Locatelli, Remy Gardner and Stefano Manzi are confirmed for next year, whilst Yamaha holds an option on Xavier Vierge that can be exercised by September.

“We do have a place available for 2027, and we haven’t signed anyone yet, but we’re very happy with Xavi Vierge and are in talks to continue with him next year,” said Yamaha’s SBK racing director Niccolo Canepa. “Of course, as always, we’re looking at all the available options, but I don’t think there are many riders on the market who could do a better job than he is doing at the moment.”

Jack Miller: “It’s always in the back of your mind”

As Goethe once said: “There is nothing more dreadful than active ignorance.” The four-time MotoGP winner agrees. “It’s a very strange feeling; it’s always in the back of your mind,” said Miller in England, speaking about his uncertain future. “Throughout my career, I’ve been good at pulling something together at the last minute. I don’t want to drop out of this championship, but I’m not naive either and I know that’s how it’s going to turn out. I feel like I’ve never ridden better, but unfortunately I don’t have the package and the standard of the lads is incredible. In the past, I had the package but wasn’t able to do what it took to keep it. That’s just how it goes. I’ve been very lucky to have achieved what I have and to have had a career like this.”

The Yamaha rider concluded: “Now I’m looking forward to what comes next. It’s not as much fun watching the Superbike World Championship this year, that’s for sure. Nothing against Nicolo Bulega – he’s doing a fantastic job. But you need rivals. If it’s always the same rider winning, people stop watching. Then it becomes a mere formality. Ultimately, Iker Lecuona beat him once, and I was pleased to see that. But it’s not just the riders – the manufacturers need to compete against each other too.”
