Outclassing the competition: Raul Fernandez was as delighted as a little child

Raul Fernandez won the MotoGP race at Silverstone on Sunday: the 25-year-old took the win in front of US team owner Justin Marks, having crashed in Saturday’s sprint race. Fernandez took the lead at Turn 1 from second on the grid on his Trackhouse Aprilia and never let anyone doubt his victory after that. Just as in Saturday’s sprint race, there was an Aprilia one-two-three on Sunday, with factory riders Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi joining Fernandez on the podium.

Raul Fernandez got off to a flying start and quickly built up a two-second lead over the pack. Interestingly, the Madrid-born rider is the twelfth different winner at Silverstone in the past twelve years! For Raul, who was competing in his 90th MotoGP race on Sunday and whose contract extension was only officially announced a few days ago, it was his second victory since Australia in autumn 2025. However, despite the victory and the 25 World Championship points, Fernandez was unable to move up from sixth place in the standings, as he had failed to score any points on Saturday.

Indescribable emotions for Raul Fernandez

“I had as much fun out there as a child,” said a visibly elated Fernandez, who had been furious with himself after his crash in Saturday’s sprint race but was jumping for joy with his crew in the parc fermé on Sunday. “I’m very happy and I don’t even know what to say, or how I feel. It’s very special: when I was battling Bezzecchi for the win in Valencia in 2025, Justin couldn’t be there – now he was here. It’s a brilliant feeling.”

Fernandez’s personal take on the weekend was as follows: “It was a brilliant weekend! It’s true that I was angry on Saturday after my mistake – that was a bitter pill to swallow! But that’s just part of the sport. As a human being, you’re bound to make a mistake now and then – but I’ve made up for it now.”

Team owner Marks was beaming behind his sunglasses, too. “Raúl’s future is now secure. We knew that if we gave him a contract, he’d perform even better – and that’s exactly what he’s doing now. I must also say: the Aprilia bikes are incredible! I’m delighted – also for our partners like Superfile. It’s lovely – it’s my first time at Silverstone.” Marks also made a point of accepting the trophy for the team on the podium and was then thoroughly doused with champagne.
