Senna Agius on his idol Casey Stoner: “When he says something, it’s worth its weight in gold”

Senna Agius is one of the rising stars of Australian motorcycling and is set to make the step up to MotoGP in 2027. When asked which rider has had a particular influence on him, the Moto2 rider doesn’t have to think twice. His great idol is his compatriot Casey Stoner – and not just because of his extraordinary skills on the bike.

“Yes, Casey is my role model. Mainly because of his personality,” replied Agius in an exclusive interview with SPEEDWEEK.com when asked about his idol. It is Stoner’s unconventional approach to the MotoGP circus that particularly impresses the young Australian.

“Some say he was a character. Whether it was right to retire for the reasons he did is entirely his decision. I have a great deal of respect for his attitude,” explained Agius.

How Stoner made a lasting impression on Agius

Stoner ended his MotoGP career at the end of 2012 at the age of just 27. By that point, he had already won two world championship titles. Stoner’s first triumph, in particular, made a lasting impression on Agius. In 2007, the Australian moved to Ducati and became world champion straight away.

“I have great respect for the way he moved to Ducati back then. He steered a project to the world title that wasn’t actually supposed to be competitive – and wasn’t, for that matter, for the other side of the garage. Nevertheless, he became world champion,” enthused Agius. “That demonstrates incredible mental strength and exceptional riding skill. Casey is a huge inspiration to me and my great idol.”

Agius now knows his role model personally. There’s an additional connection via his manager and mentor, Chaz Davies, who is a close friend of Stoner’s. However, Agius had already met the two-time MotoGP World Champion before Davies took on a more prominent role in his career.

“I met Casey and actually knew him a little bit before I started working more closely with Chaz. Since then, of course, I’ve got to know him a bit better,” reported the Moto2 rider. Nevertheless, Agius doesn’t want to talk about a close friendship. “When Casey comes to Europe and we bump into each other at the circuit, we have a bit of a chat.”

Just a few words, but what Stoner says carries weight

The two Australians spent more time together back home. “We spent a few hours together, particularly at Phillip Island during the event leading up to the Grand Prix,” revealed Agius.

In the process, he came to particularly appreciate one trait of his idol: Stoner observes a great deal, but is reluctant to offer his opinions. That is precisely why his comments carry such weight for Agius.

“He observes everything very closely. He’s not the sort of person who’s constantly saying what he thinks. But when he does say something, it’s worth its weight in gold,” emphasised the Australian. “His comments, recommendations and tips are incredibly valuable.”

Agius particularly appreciates the fact that Stoner offers his advice in a targeted manner. “I get the feeling that Casey is someone who is always observing everything, but chooses very carefully when to say something. And that’s exactly why every piece of feedback from him is something special.”

The idol whom Agius once admired from afar has now also become an occasional source of advice. And when Stoner speaks, the young Australian listens very carefully.
