Rally legend Armin Kremer at the DM season finale with a new co-driver

Following his successful comeback last year, Armin Kremer is once again set to take on the challenging gravel stages around Boxberg. Last year, Kremer was narrowly beaten by Kahle after a thrilling duel, when a puncture thwarted his hopes of victory.

For 57-year-old Kremer – German Champion in 1996, 1998 and 1999 and European Champion in 2001 – there is a significant change for the season finale: Michael Wenzel will be taking his place in the co-driver’s seat for the first time.

The Mecklenburg native will once again be driving his tried-and-tested Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, prepared by the Austrian BRR team. Kremer has prepared for the event with extensive test drives, fine-tuning the Rally2 car to the specific demands of the Lausitz circuit.

“It’s an impressive starting line-up and, of course, I’m particularly looking forward to the duel with Matthias Kahle. Last year was already a great and, above all, exciting reunion with him. I’d be happy for that to continue,” says Kremer, who will have to hold his own against strong international competition.

An additional challenge awaits in the co-driver’s seat this time. Instead of his daughter Ella, with whom he finished third in the Lausitz last year, Michael Wenzel will be responsible for the directions for the first time. The experienced co-driver, who most recently also navigated for Germany’s rally hopeful Claire Schönborn, will have to gel with Kremer under competitive conditions on the fast gravel stages.

“That’s obviously an extra challenge. But Michael is a very experienced co-driver and I’m confident that we’ll work well together,” says Kremer optimistically.

Meanwhile, his daughter Ella is set for a very special end to the season. Together with Marijan Griebel, she is travelling to the final round of the German Rally Championship (DRM) as the championship leader. Her lead over Philip Geipel and Jennifer Lerch stands at just two points, meaning the title will only be decided on the final special stages of the season.

“It’s obviously great for rally fans too that the title race is so exciting this year and won’t be decided until the final round,” says Armin Kremer, who will therefore be following the action from a family perspective as well.

With a total of 94 teams entered, the Lausitz Rally once again boasts a top-class line-up. The programme features eight special stages covering 146.84 kilometres, 122.26 kilometres of which are on gravel. In particular, the fast sections on the former opencast mining site, the deeply rutted tracks and the sometimes difficult visibility conditions will really put the competitors to the test.

It is precisely this unique character that makes the event so appealing to the Crivitz native. “Of course I’m very motivated, because the Lausitz Rally is a fantastic event and unique in Germany. It’s run almost entirely on gravel. That’s another reason why we need to support it, and I can only hope that those in charge of the DRM see it the same way and give it a permanent place in the championship in future,” explains Kremer.
