The Formula 1 stars are contesting the 20th Grand Prix of the season today at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace. And, just as was the case during Saturday’s qualifying session, the weather could dictate the proceedings. Weather experts are forecasting even more rain in the run-up to the start of the race.
This could play into Max Verstappen’s hands. The Red Bull Racing star has already proven in the past just how well he copes on a wet track at Interlagos. And the Dutchman will have to stage a comeback. He’s starting the race with a new power unit that exceeds the permitted quota, meaning he’ll be racing from 21st on the grid, at the back of the field.
Just how far the four-time champion can move up the field is one of the big questions of the race. He himself says: “Let’s see what we can achieve. Of course, things have gone well for me here in the past, and I hope I can put in another good performance this time and score plenty of points. It’s always something very special to be in Brazil. The fans motivate everyone – even in the heaviest rain.”
Verstappen isn’t the only one who’ll have to work his way up from the back of the field; Lewis Hamilton will also be demoted due to the use of new engine parts, and will start from 20th on the grid, in the second-last row. “It’s certainly going to be interesting, with Max and me back there. I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun as we work our way up the field. Hopefully we can challenge a few of the drivers further up the field.”
You can follow how Hamilton and Verstappen’s chase unfolds, and see what pole-sitter Lando Norris and world champion Kimi Antonelli can achieve from the front row, here in the SPEEDWEEK.com live ticker.
