Formula 1 veteran Sergio Pérez: Doubts ahead of his GP comeback with Cadillac

The fact that Sergio Pérez took some time out following his – not entirely voluntary – departure from the Red Bull Racing team came as no surprise to any regular in the paddock. After all, the driver from Guadalajara had led the hectic life of a Formula One star for 14 years, and had more than earned this break.

Most F1 observers and fans also assumed that Pérez would return to the starting grid. After all, the Mexican had demonstrated his pace on numerous occasions – and had made no secret of his disappointment at the end of his partnership with the Milton Keynes-based team.

Sergio Pérez: Strong performances in a weak car

In fact, his return came a year later; alongside Valtteri Bottas, Pérez was given the chance to help out newcomers Cadillac and chase points for the US team. The six-time Grand Prix winner himself, however, had his doubts, as he revealed in an interview with ‘Racer.com’.

“I think my performance was at a very high level. And when it came to the comeback, I had my doubts. But I’m really happy with the decision to come back, because I’ve proved to myself that I’m still among the best,” Pérez explained confidently.

“For people who understand the sport, it’s easy to see the performance I’m getting out of the car. And in Formula 1, that’s the most important thing. I’m also satisfied with my personal performance,” emphasised the driver with 39 Grand Prix podium finishes to his name, who has been unable to celebrate any major successes with the underperforming car of the US team.
