George Russell (Mercedes): Finally a success – engagement!

Mercedes star George Russell started the 2026 Grand Prix season as the championship favourite and lived up to that role at the season opener – winning from pole position.

But after that, his team-mate Kimi Antonelli really hit his stride and won five races in a row. It wasn’t until the Austrian Grand Prix in July that the 28-year-old Russell was able to win another World Championship race.

Whilst Mercedes teenager Antonelli was flying from victory to victory, Russell suffered repeated setbacks: unfavourable team strategy, technical issues (a battery fault in Canada) or problems with rivals (pushed off the track by Hamilton in Belgium), penalties that later proved to be unjustified (speeding in the Monaco pit lane), bad luck with the timing of safety car periods. The result: he is already 59 points behind championship leader Antonelli.

But now, at last, a moment of triumph for the current third-placed driver in the World Championship, as things are going really well in his private life: On Sunday evening, the Brit announced his engagement to his long-term partner Carmen Montero Mundt on Instagram – in the form of a few photos – a romantic moment for the couple, the ring on the bride-to-be’s finger, the happy fiancée, all captured during a romantic dinner by the sea.

Carmen Montero Mundt and Russell, who are the same age, fell in love in 2020 after being introduced to each other by mutual friends. The Spanish woman works in the financial sector; she moved to England at the age of 18 to study for a degree in management at the University of Westminster.

As recently as last June, George Russell – who otherwise rarely speaks about his private life – told *The Times*: “Carmen brings exactly the stability I need to my hectic racing life. She is my future.”

Several fellow racing drivers reacted to the Instagram post with congratulations, including Kimi Antonelli, Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon. The post garnered 2.3 million likes and more than 40,000 comments.

It is not known when or where the wedding will take place.
