George Russell teases Lando Norris: “If it saves a few tenths...”

Things are going better for George Russell off the track than on it: the seasoned Mercedes driver got engaged during the summer break – as the photos on social media show. And his long-term girlfriend, Carmen Montero Mundt, said ‘I do’.

Russell was asked about it at Zandvoort. And he revealed: “It was a very special moment to ask for her hand. And it was the right time to do it. I gave it a lot of thought and it was an interesting process designing the ring and planning everything. I thought I’d find the right words, but when I got down on one knee, I suddenly felt nervous. Still, it was brilliant.”

The 28-year-old then joked, referring to Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris, who was answering questions from the media alongside him at the FIA press conference: “I hope it’ll save a few tenths – even Lando would get engaged if it saved a few tenths...”

On a more serious note, Russell then emphasised the important role played by one’s personal life: “Your private life is really important. Because we all lead such hectic lives, and the people we live with play a key role in helping us process all the emotions that come with this lifestyle. I’ve been with Carmen for a really long time, and I don’t think much will change, because she’s been a very important person in my life for a very long time. It was more about taking the next step.”

When asked about the possibility of having children, the seven-time Grand Prix winner waved the question away: “I don’t think that’ll be on the cards any time soon. At least, I’m not aware of anything, but it will certainly become an issue in the future.”
