Hope for German GP fans: will F1 be racing at Hockenheim again soon?

There was a time when Germany hosted Formula 1 twice in one season. Back then, Michael Schumacher sparked an unprecedented boom in the sport, and the Grand Prix stars put their foot down at both the Nürburgring and the Hockenheimring. But that was quite a while ago now.

The Formula 1 circus last set up camp on German soil in 2020. This wasn’t entirely by choice: the coronavirus pandemic had severely restricted the options available to the sport’s decision-makers. It was only this emergency situation that made the comeback at the Nürburgring possible. On 11 October, the Eifel Grand Prix took place, which Lewis Hamilton – still driving for Mercedes at the time – won.

Since then, there have been several attempts to bring the German Grand Prix back onto the World Championship calendar. However, these efforts have mostly foundered on the issue of money. German Grand Prix fans have not yet given up hope, though, and rightly so, according to Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

The Italian recently explained during a press conference that interest in the premier class is also growing in Europe, and that he is, in principle, in favour of a return to Germany. “We have re-established contact with the operators of the Hockenheimring, and initial discussions have taken place. They are currently in the process of modernising their circuit.”

“And when we talk about hosting a Formula 1 race weekend, investment is also required. Our platform demands it,” explained the former Ferrari boss, referring to the conditions that must be met. However, he also made it clear that this is not about short-term plans; rather, a medium-term comeback is possible.
