Hungarian GP in Budapest on TV: New surface on two corners

Before the summer break, Formula 1 will hold one more conventional race weekend at the Hungaroring. Extensive construction work has been carried out at the circuit, not far from the Hungarian capital, over the past two years: the paddock, hospitality areas, the circuit itself and the grandstands have all been refurbished. Also new this year: the tarmac in corners 1 and 12 has been resurfaced, following last year’s refurbishment of the pit lane and the starting grid.
The 4.381-kilometre circuit, with a total of 14 corners, is often compared to a karting track because it is relatively short and quite twisty (some corners are even 180 degrees). There is only one real straight. The race in Hungary consists of 70 laps.
The car set-ups are similar to those in Monaco – accordingly, tyre manufacturer Pirelli has selected the tyre compounds for the weekend: the C3, C4 and C5 compounds are on the line-up.
Pirelli states: “The three softest compounds in the range will also be used in Budapest. They are the ideal choice for a slow circuit where traction and braking stability are crucial for mastering changes of direction. Due to the age of the sections that have not yet been resurfaced, the track surface is particularly rough, and the grip level is among the lowest of the season, although the track will evolve significantly over the course of the weekend.” Aston Martin, Audi and Alpine aren’t heading straight into the summer break just yet. They’ll be testing in Budapest with Pirelli after the weekend.
