Verstappen’s team-mate Isack Hadjar: One point after a pit lane start
Isack Hadjar really had it all during the Formula 1 weekend in Singapore: engine failure, gearbox problems, a pit lane start. Yet the Red Bull Racing driver fought his way through and secured a point for his team.

Whilst Max Verstappen won both the Sprint and the race in Singapore and was also fastest in qualifying on both occasions, everything that could go wrong did go wrong for his Red Bull Racing team-mate Isack Hadjar: the Frenchman retired from the Sprint with engine failure. In qualifying for the Grand Prix, he had gearbox problems, was unable to set a time and had to start the Singapore Grand Prix from the pit lane. Even so, on a circuit where overtaking is extremely difficult, he fought his way up to 10th place and secured a point.
Hadjar: A point for the team in Singapore!
There was great jubilation on the Verstappen side of the Red Bull Racing garage. And on the other side, the question: just how much bad luck can one actually have? Hadjar said after the race: “It took a lot of work from everyone on my side of the garage to secure that one point. That’s a point for the team! I’m very grateful to them for turning things around.”
Nevertheless, Hadjar didn’t let it get him down and drew a surprisingly positive conclusion from the Grand Prix: “We clearly have the pace. Max showed that. Congratulations to him. I know he wanted this win so much.” For Verstappen, it was his first win in Singapore. The Dutchman has now won at every circuit on the current F1 calendar, with the exception of the Madrid circuit, which was raced on for the first time this year.
Despite everything, Hadjar said after the Singapore Grand Prix – in which he did, after all, work his way up from 22nd to 10th place: “It was fun. Coming from the back and overtaking so many cars is always fun. Of course, I wanted to finish in the points, but on a circuit where such a long line of cars can form, I wasn’t sure if that would work out. The car was quick, so I was able to work my way through.”
Red Bull Racing team principal Mekies praises
His team principal, Laurent Mekies, said: “Isack put in a strong performance from the back of the field. He gave it his all, drove aggressively, created opportunities and showed great pace. After a difficult weekend, we didn’t give him the chance to really fight because we had so many problems with the car, but it was lovely to see him rewarded for his efforts. Hats off also to his entire crew, who responded brilliantly to every challenge and worked tirelessly to get the car back on track session after session.”
