McLaren team principal Andrea Stella reveals: “This is the most important insight”

Even before the start of the season, it was clear to Formula 1 officials and World Championship entrants that the learning curve would be particularly steep this year. With one of the biggest rule changes in the history of Formula 1 having been implemented, all teams and drivers were, so to speak, starting from scratch. In fact, the teams were able to gather a great deal of important insight from the new generation of cars and engines that hit the track.

But what was the most important lesson? In a team interview, Andrea Stella provides a clear answer to this question. The McLaren team principal says: “I believe the most important insight we’ve gained from these seven months of hard work is that unity means strength in times of great difficulty. We have – first and foremost to ourselves – proven just how crucial team cohesion is to picking ourselves up again and charting a course back to the top.”

A high price to pay for the 2025 World Championship title race

“Having made steady progress over three years, and having celebrated three out of four world championship titles between 2024 and 2025, the start of this season was a real fresh start. And not just because what are probably the most significant rule changes in the history of the sport were implemented. But above all because we realised just how high the price was for the efforts we had made in 2025 to secure both World Championship titles,” explains the engineer.

Stella knows: “It could have broken us. We could have found excuses for not being able to start the World Championship the way we’d finished the previous one, but that wasn’t the case.” And he emphasises: “We tried to understand the technical and strategic reasons behind it, and focused our efforts on that. And that makes me really proud of this team.”
