In Barcelona and Silverstone, Mercedes had to concede victory to Ferrari; at the race on the outskirts of the Spanish capital, Lewis Hamilton secured his first Grand Prix triumph in red, whilst at the historic British circuit – which is closer to the Mercedes factory than any other World Championship track – Charles Leclerc was the lucky winner.
At the most recent showdown at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Kimi Antonelli was once again the first Mercedes driver to cross the finish line. The teenager from Bologna thereby extended his World Championship lead over Hamilton to 45 points. George Russell, on the other hand, came away empty-handed following a collision with the seven-time world champion.
Now, with the final race weekend before the summer break on the agenda, a very different task lies ahead, as team principal Toto Wolff explains: “The Hungaroring presents a different challenge to the circuits we’ve raced on recently. Silverstone and Spa offer limited opportunities for energy recovery, whereas Budapest has plenty of potential for recuperation. That changes the demands on the car and our approach to the weekend.”
However, the ultimate goal remains unchanged, as the ambitious Viennese makes clear: “As always, the field is highly competitive and it will be the small details that make the difference. Our goal is clear: we want to have a flawless and reliable weekend and score the points our car is capable of before we head into the summer break.”
The 2027 MotoGP grid will feature five new regular riders, with at least three of those dropped set to move to the World Superbike Championship. The ones to suffer as a result are Alvaro Bautista and Danilo Petrucci.
