Mike Krack on Fernando Alonso: “The sport needs someone like him”

What does the future hold for Fernando Alonso – and, above all, where will he go next? The Spaniard has so far left his future from next year onwards – that is, for the 2027 season – up in the air. The most likely options are: he continues to drive in Formula 1 for Aston Martin; he takes on a different role within the team; or he drives for Aston Martin’s World Endurance Championship team. Alonso confirmed on Thursday, ahead of his home Grand Prix in Madrid, that the WEC is also an option.

Alonso made it clear that he needs more time before announcing a decision. And that decision depends on certain factors, including the regulations and, consequently, how the cars handle next season. If the regulations remain as they are, does that mean, for instance, that Formula 1 will lose Fernando Alonso as an active driver?

Aston Martin wants to continue with him

Alonso’s Chief Trackside Officer at Aston Martin, Mike Krack, said on Friday in Madrid: “It’s best to ask him yourself how serious he is about this. Ultimately, it’s always been clear that the team wants to carry on. I think we’ve made that clear all along, but we have to respect how Fernando feels about it. We must respect the time he wants to take. And as I’ve already said, we’re confident that we can find a good solution for everyone. And now it’s a case of waiting and seeing. He has to make up his mind, and then we’ll carry on.”

The two-time world champion’s wish list is specific and extensive. Krack: “He has made it clear that it’s not just one single thing he’d like to see changed. I think the sport needs someone like him. I believe we’d all be very pleased if Fernando were to carry on. And whatever can be done to accommodate that will, in my view, be done. And then I hope we can reach a good solution and carry on.”
