Our new puzzle: Racing Rarities – A Grand Prix without a country name

Mostly drawn from the archives of our photo partners XPB and Grand Prix Photo, every week from Tuesday we present a little piece of motorsport history. For the new puzzle: This is one of those Formula 1 World Championship races where a Grand Prix did not bear the name of a country.

Our clue for the final task was: Is this a lamb or a lion? Who is this Formula 1 one-hit wonder? ‘Lamb and lion’ was a little play on words, as the picture shows the Italian Lamberto Leoni, who only managed to qualify for one Grand Prix in the Formula 1 World Championship; not here at Monza in 1977 in his Surtees TS19-Ford, but a year later in Argentina, driving for Ensign.

Lamberto Leoni, born on 24 May 1953 in Argenta (Emilia-Romagna), made his way through Italian Formula 3 and international Formula 2, with mixed results.

The highlight of his European Formula 2 Championship campaign was his race victory at Misano in 1977. The field at the time included drivers such as Eddie Cheever, Didier Pironi, Clay Regazzoni, Danny Sullivan, Elio de Angelis, Bruno Giacomelli, Vittorio Brambilla, Riccardo Patrese and René Arnoux.

This led to an invitation from motorsport legend John Surtees to Monza in 1977, where Leoni was, however, unable to qualify.

At the start of the 1978 season, Leoni drove an Ensign N177; he retired in Argentina (engine failure), and in Brazil a half-shaft snapped during the warm-up session on Sunday morning, meaning Lamberto was unable to start the race.

This was followed by two failed qualifying attempts at Kyalami and Long Beach, after which he only made the headlines once more in Formula 1 – when he and his First Racing team tried in vain to enter the top flight.

This chassis was sold to Ernesto Vita, who entered it as the ‘Life’ in 1990 and suffered a disastrous outcome, largely due to the woeful W12 engine.

Leoni entered powerboat racing in 1992. Together with his compatriot Edoardo Polli, he finished second in the Offshore Class 1 in 1997, both in the World Championship and the European Championship. He repeated these successes in 2003. In total, Leoni won eight powerboat Grand Prix races.
