Pierre Gasly remembers his late friend Anthoine Hubert at Spa

Since August 2019, the Formula 1 race weekend in Belgium has been different: at the joint Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 race weekend, the memory of a terrible weekend seven years ago has been ever-present ever since.

Spa, 31 August 2019: Formula 2 drivers Anthoine Hubert and Juan Manuel Correa were involved in a serious crash on Saturday on the circuit in the Ardennes. By that evening, the sad news was confirmed: Anthoine Hubert had died, whilst Correa survived with serious injuries and would undergo numerous operations in the aftermath of the crash.

Anthoine Hubert was a close friend of Pierre Gasly, who now drives for Alpine F1. Every year since the accident, Gasly has paid tribute to his late friend around the time of the Belgian Grand Prix. This year, too, he is once again organising the annual ‘Run for Anthoine’ together with his Alpine team – a run around the circuit in honour of Anthoine Hubert. The memorial run is taking place for the fourth time this year.

Track run with two moments of remembrance

On the evening of media day – that is, on Thursday – Gasly and Alpine (Hubert was a junior driver in the squad of parent company Renault) are inviting all staff from the Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 paddocks, as well as the media, to the memorial run. Two stops are planned along the seven-kilometre jogging circuit: one at Eau Rouge in memory of Hubert. In previous years, Gasly laid flowers there in his memory. Shortly afterwards, there will also be a stop on the Kemmel Straight, in memory of the Dutch junior driver Dilano van’t Hoff, who was fatally injured in a race in the FRECA junior series at Spa in 2023.
