Ralf Schumacher on the new Cadillac team principal: “Not the last change”

The Cadillac team joined Formula 1 this year and, as expected, has suffered a number of retirements in the first eleven rounds of the World Championship. Valtteri Bottas and Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez occupy the bottom two places in the World Championship standings. The Finn crossed the finish line in six of the eleven Grands Prix, whilst his Mexican team-mate finished seven times. The team has yet to score any championship points and sits bottom of the championship standings.

The reliability issues have prompted Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss to make a change at the top of the team. Graeme Lowdon, who was already on board during the preparations for the team’s Formula 1 debut and helped build the team from the ground up, has had to step down from his post. His successor is Marcin Budkowski, who has more than 20 years’ experience in Formula 1 across various roles. The engineer, who is of Polish and French origin, will be at the Cadillac pit wall as early as next week’s race at Zandvoort.

Ralf Schumacher: High praise for Cadillac

Former Grand Prix driver and current TV pundit Ralf Schumacher commented on ‘Sky Sport’ regarding the change of leadership at the US racing team: “Cadillac has now brought in a man who has experience, has previously been in Formula 1 and has worked in larger teams. We mustn’t forget: Cadillac has built everything from scratch. At first, you bring in people just so you can get on the track at all. Now they’re trying to attract higher-calibre staff.”

The German is convinced that Lowdon isn’t the only Cadillac employee who will have to leave. He says: “I don’t think this will be the last change at Cadillac either.” And he adds: “Nevertheless, Cadillac deserves a great deal of credit. Unlike some other teams, they’re actually very straightforward. Admittedly, they’ve had a bit too many brake fires of late, but even so: hats off to them, they’ve done quite well.”
