Rumours of Williams’ interest in Pérez: Cadillac F1 CEO Towriss responds

The fact that Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez took a one-year break from Formula 1 following his departure from the Red Bull Racing team was due in no small part to the fact that the decision for him to leave had been made very late. By that point, the Mexican had competed in 281 Grand Prix races and secured six Grand Prix victories. He had stood on the podium 39 times.

With this wealth of experience and track record – having provided valuable support to his team-mate Max Verstappen on more than one occasion in the World Championship battle – he was highly sought after by a number of team principals.

Sergio Pérez: a candidate to succeed Sainz

Pérez took a break from racing but returned to the starting grid this year. In the underperforming Grand Prix car of Formula 1 newcomer Cadillac, he put in relatively strong performances, and this did not go unnoticed, even outside his own team.

The 36-year-old from Guadalajara is therefore on the list of all those team principals who may need to fill a vacant seat. This includes Williams team principal James Vowles, who is having to consider the possibility of Carlos Sainz leaving. Furthermore, Alex Albon’s future with the team is also being called into question following his critical comments about his employer’s slump in form.

What does Cadillac have to say about the rumours that Pérez is already in talks with Williams’ management? Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss isn’t worried. He emphasises: “Checo is an incredible asset to our team. He’s put in some excellent performances and really gone for it.”
