Verstappen rumours: Does Oscar Piastri have to worry about his McLaren seat?

The Formula 1 season is in full swing and, as the GP stars race from one European Grand Prix to the next, transfer rumours continue to circulate. One of the rumourmongers’ favourites is Max Verstappen, who, thanks to his talent, is likely to be right at the top of every team principal’s wish list. Consequently, he is frequently rumoured to be moving to a Red Bull Racing rival.

This is fuelled by statements from rival team bosses, who are more or less openly vying for the four-time champion’s services. Take Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, for example, who never tires of praising the Dutchman’s talent. However, the Viennese manager recently made it clear that he has no intention of changing the current driver line-up, meaning he plans to field Kimi Antonelli and George Russell again in 2027.

Oscar Piastri remains relaxed

Speculation about the exceptional driver moving to Mercedes has died down, but rumours of a move in general have not. Soon after, Verstappen was linked with a possible move to McLaren – even though the world champion team has long-term contracts with champion Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Speaking in the Silverstone paddock about the transfer speculation suggesting he might have to vacate his seat, Piastri said: “That doesn’t mean much to me. Max is a huge talent and it seems he’s looking around. But I’m very happy with my seat, and I’ve been assured on several occasions that the team is happy with me too. And I trust my team.”

Piastri is completing his fourth season with the McLaren team, which announced a multi-year contract extension with the Australian at the start of last year. He led the World Championship for much of last year, but ultimately had to settle for third place overall. This year, after seven rounds of the World Championship, he sits fourth in the standings.
