Alonso Lopez (1st): Back on the road to victory following hand fractures

The Aragon Grand Prix turned into a triumphant race for Alonso Lopez. Having secured pole position in Saturday’s qualifying, he dominated Sunday’s race. The Gresini rider celebrated a start-to-finish victory, crossing the finish line 0.8 seconds ahead of Izan Guevara (Pramac Yamaha). Third place went to Aspar rider David Alonso.

“Unbelievable! I didn’t think I’d be able to pull off a race like this, because I knew I was up against some very strong rivals,” said Lopez after the race. “The hardest part was managing the rear tyre well. But I managed to set the pace; I felt really good right from the start and was able to avoid making any mistakes. Now I want to maintain this level of performance. We worked really well together, and I’m very happy and proud of what we’ve achieved. And as it’s my first win here, that makes it even more special.”

Training crash set Lopez back

Alonso Lopez’s last Moto2 victory was already two and a half years ago. Back then, he won the 2024 season opener in Qatar. Lopez’s season so far has been anything but ideal. In Brno, he had to withdraw after FP1 due to pain in his right hand. He had previously sustained fractures to the base of his fourth metacarpal bone and his scaphoid bone in a training accident back home in Spain. As a result, he was also forced to miss the Grands Prix at Assen and the Sachsenring. Lopez was back on the grid at Silverstone and finished sixth. This was followed by his victory at Aragon.

Having previously spent four years with Boscoscuro, Lopez moved to the Gresini team in 2026, where he had to adapt to the Kalex. “I struggled with the Kalex at first. We then made very good progress,” explained the 24-year-old. “After my injury, we found a way to maintain the pace. I was also very fast at Jerez, Le Mans and Austin, but I couldn’t sustain the tyre’s performance there.”
