Alonso: “I was the same rider who lost his way at Silverstone”

After two disappointing race weekends at the Sachsenring and Silverstone, David Alonso was determined to fight for the top positions again at Aragon. In qualifying, he secured fifth on the grid with his Kalex. From there, the Aspar rider steadily fought his way up the field throughout the 19-lap race. Gresini rider Alonso Lopez was in a league of his own at the front, but Izan Guevara (Pramac) was within striking distance.

On the final lap, Alonso and Guevara were locked in a close battle for second place. Alonso managed to overtake Guevara several times, but Guevara successfully fought back each time. In the end, Alonso was pipped by 0.081 seconds.

“I had a right lot of fun. I enjoyed the race from the first to the last lap; on every lap I was able to set my own pace and pull off several overtaking manoeuvres,” said David Alonso, expressing his satisfaction with his race. “What I liked best was that I was still the same rider who’d lost his way at Silverstone, but this time I took a deep breath and told myself: ‘Stay on the line’.”

David Alonso: “In the last race, I’d completely lost my way”

At Silverstone, Alonso crossed the finish line in 21st place; he wasn’t competitive. “In the last race, I’d completely lost my way, but I didn’t lose faith, and now we’ve finally made it back onto the podium,” he said with relief. “These two weekends have shown me that I need to believe in myself more and that we can still turn the situation around for the better. The race was like a video game – I kept overtaking, and it got tighter and tighter.”

Commenting on the thrilling final lap, Alonso said: “It was a very close finish with Izan Guevara, but it was a tough and fair battle. It’s brilliant to ride side by side with another rider, corner by corner, without either of us resorting to a single unsportsmanlike move. I’d like to thank the team for helping me keep smiling, and also all the fans in Aragon who supported me. There were loads of ‘80s’ to be seen in the stands!”

Following his third-place finish in Aragon, next year’s MotoGP rider now has 132 points to his name. This puts him in sixth place in the World Championship standings. He trails leader Manuel Gonzalez (Intact GP) by 75.5 points.
