Rookies’ Cup rider Gonzalez to replace David Munoz at Silverstone and Aragon

David Munoz broke his hip in a devastating crash during the Moto3 race in Hungary in early June. A few weeks later, Munoz also underwent surgery on the radius in his left forearm. The Spaniard was forced to miss the Grands Prix at Brno, Assen and the Sachsenring.

The Intact rider is currently working hard on his recovery. “He’s making very good progress and is very hopeful of a comeback soon,” Intact team manager Peter Öttl recently told SPEEDWEEK.com. Exactly when Munoz will be able to get back on his KTM remains uncertain at present. The focus is on a full recovery.

The fact is that the race weekends at Silverstone and Aragon in August are coming too soon for the injured Muñoz. For this reason, Peter Öttl set about looking for a suitable replacement rider. On his wish list was an 18-year-old from the Red Bull Rookies Cup with a track record of success. Öttl found just the man – on 3 August, the Intact team announced that Spaniard David Gonzalez would stand in for his compatriot Munoz in the next two Grands Prix.

“As David Muñoz remains sidelined due to injury, the 18-year-old Spaniard David Gonzalez from Medina will step in for him at the upcoming Grands Prix at Silverstone and Aragon. He is currently fifth in the overall standings of the Red Bull Rookies Cup, and we are looking forward to seeing him in the colours of Intact GP,” said an official statement from the Memmingen-based team on Monday.

Gonzalez will therefore make his debut in the Motorcycle World Championship at the British Grand Prix (7–9 August) in Silverstone.
