Intact GP instead of the Rookies Cup: David Gonzalez opted for a Moto3 start

It is certainly a remarkable decision: David Gonzalez, who is enjoying a successful second season in the Red Bull Rookies series, has opted to take the next step in his Moto3 development with the German Intact team at Misano rather than compete in the Red Bull Rookies series.

At the races at Silverstone and MotorLand Aragon, the injured Intact Moto3 winner David Munoz was replaced by rising star David Gonzalez. This move, which resulted in a World Championship point on his very first outing in England and a place in Q2 at Aragon, did not conflict with Gonzalez’s ‘main job’ in the Red Bull Rookies Cup. In the Rookies Cup, Gonzalez is in fifth place, just five points behind third, and therefore still has a good chance of finishing the cup in the top three with four races remaining.

However, instead of competing in the Rookies Cup, the Spaniard decided to ride the KTM of the injured David Munoz once more. Intact team manager Peter Öttl speaking to SPEEDWEEK.com: “David told us that it would be more important to him to take this opportunity to continue investing directly in his Moto3 development with us – and to forego a start in the Cup for that. Of course, this has to work for all parties. We then found a way forward here together with the Rookies Cup organisers.”

Gonzalez could also compete in Austria

Peter Öttl continued, looking ahead to the next event in Austria, where both Moto3 and the Rookies’ Cup will be on the programme again: “Whilst it is possible that David Munoz could race again at the Austrian Grand Prix, it is still too early to confirm this. Should his comeback be delayed once again, David Gonzalez would also be on standby as a replacement at Spielberg.”

An unusual but understandable decision by Gonzalez and Intact GP with a view to a possible collaboration in 2027 as well. It will be some time yet before a decision is made on Intact GP’s rider line-up for the smallest GP class, but it is considered certain that Öttl will need to fill at least one Moto3 ride.
