Marco Morelli: Fast Argentine in the shadow of Maximo Quiles

Marco Morelli has been performing very well in his first full season as a Moto3 rider. At the second race of the season in Brazil, the Aspar rider and team-mate of Maximo Quiles raced to second place. He secured two further podium finishes at Jerez and Assen. After finishing fourth at the Sachsenring, he could only manage 16th place at Silverstone following the summer break.

In Aragon, the Argentine was keen to get back on track, which he managed to do. In Saturday’s qualifying session, he secured second on the grid for his KTM – just ahead of his team-mate Quiles. Morelli dropped back to fourth place after the opening laps, but remained within striking distance of the top three. In the closing stages, Morelli found himself right in the thick of the battle for victory. In the end, he had to concede defeat to Quiles and David Almansa (Intact GP).

Morelli: “We’ve taken three steps forward at Aragon”

Morelli thus secured his fourth podium of the season at Aragon. “It was a very tough race, but I’m happy with this third place, as I’d just come off the back of a very difficult weekend at Silverstone. It seemed as though we’d taken a step backwards, but at Aragon we’ve taken three steps forward. That’s the positive thing about it – both the team and I have managed to get back on our feet,” said the 19-year-old happily.

Morelli then reflected on his race. “The race was very fast; I knew it would be like that. I made mistakes and lost time, which forced me to push the tyres harder than I really should have in order to get back into the leading group,” he explained. “I wanted to fight for the win, but in the end I was at my limit and didn’t manage it. I finished just behind Quiles and Almansa, and that will be the aim from now on: to fine-tune the details and close the gap on them.”
