Alex Marquez (5th) is frustrated: Podium chance lost after a botched Q2?

Q2 ahead of the Misano Sprint turned into a disaster for Alex Márquez: shortly after the session began, the Gresini rider skidded into the gravel, followed by a second crash in the final stages of Q2. As a result, the Spaniard could only manage 9th on the grid. “The mistake at Turn 8 was my fault; I went into it too fast. At Turn 4, it was the final lap. I was already well off the ideal line and I had to turn in, come what may. Then I crashed.”

He blames the complex tyre situation: Marquez had been riding on used soft rear tyres in free practice to prepare for the race. “In hindsight, it would have been better to work more with yesterday’s fresher tyres.” His conclusion was harsh: “A good qualifying session is the result of doing the right things at the right moment. Today it was exactly the opposite. I thought about the lap time first, rather than the pace – and made too many mistakes in the process.”

In the Sprint, he turned things round. On the medium-compound rear tyre, he benefited from the tussle between Fermin Aldeguer and Pedro Acosta, both of whom he overtook with a single manoeuvre. “I was lucky; I was simply able to overtake. They opened the door for me.” After that, he got stuck behind Jorge Martin (Aprilia) and Fabio Di Giannantonio. The problem was that the temperature in his front tyre kept rising.

When Martin overtook Di Giannantonio, Alex Márquez sensed an opportunity. “That was my moment. But then I made a mistake in the first section and lost ground again.” The gap had widened, an attack was no longer possible, and the front tyre was no longer providing the best grip. He secured 5th place mainly through “rhythm, style and consistency”.

From his position in the chasing pack, he had a clear view of Jorge Martin’s RS-GP and described his observations. “They have a lot of stability, especially in the fast corners. They maintain rear-wheel grip incredibly consistently, whilst we tend to have rather unexpected spins.” He doesn’t see this as a general Ducati problem: “The balance is even. And Marc has won on the Ducati – so we’ve been rewarded.”

For Sunday, the Gresini team plans to work on the bike’s turn-in behaviour. “My problem isn’t in the fast sections, but at the braking points. We’re trying to rebalance the bike.” The pace for more would have been there: “We had the pace for a podium. Not quite enough for Marco and Marc, but tomorrow we’ll lose that chance because of qualifying – just like last year.” In the World Championship, Marquez remains ninth with 133 points, just ten points behind the struggling Francesco Bagnaia.
