Bezzecchi after crashing out on lap 1: “We can’t turn back time”

It should have been the highlight of his season. On Saturday, Marco Bezzecchi became the first rider in history to break the 1:30 mark, finished second in the sprint race and defended his pole position against Marc Marquez (Ducati) with everything he had on Sunday. But in the fast Turn 13, he slid into the gravel – out on Lap 1, whilst leading the race in its early stages. Alarmingly, this is his fifth Sunday without scoring points this season.

“Everything was going well, but I made a mistake at Turn 13 and the front wheel slipped away,” said the Italian, trying to pinpoint the cause. He cited the full fuel tank as a factor: “You have to hit the braking point more precisely. The bike felt a bit unsettled in the fast section, and when I braked, I couldn’t hold the line cleanly.”

Back in the pits, Bezzecchi sat in silence for several minutes afterwards before sitting down with his crew to analyse the race. He emphasised that he hadn’t done anything wrong at the start. He dismissed the suggestion that he’d been too ambitious on home soil: “When you start from the front, you want to win. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Misano or anywhere else.” He didn’t sustain any injuries in the crash.

From a 102-point lead to a 33-point deficit

The outcome is anything but positive – even for his employer Aprilia, who were actually in high spirits with a special livery. Bezzecchi is third in the World Championship with 241 points, 33 points behind Marc Marquez (Ducati) and Jorge Martin (Aprilia). At the time of Mugello, his lead over Marquez had still stood at 102 points – the momentum from the start of the season has completely fizzled out.
