Di Giannantonio on the crash in FP1: “We still need to understand what happened”

VR46 rider Fabio Di Giannantonio would have hoped for a different start to the MotoGP event in Aragon. In FP1 on Friday morning, he crashed his Desmosedici right at the start. At least ‘Diggia’ emerged unscathed and finished the session in eighth place.

“The day didn’t get off to the best start – I crashed this morning on the second lap of FP1, which wasn’t exactly the ideal start to the weekend,” said Di Giannantonio, shaking his head. “We still need to work out what happened, but it’ll provide valuable insights for the future; so we can see the positive side even in this situation.”

The good feeling returned in qualifying

He felt more comfortable on his spare bike, and things went well again for the Italian in the afternoon’s qualifying session. Finishing three-tenths of a second behind Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia), he secured fourth place. “In the afternoon, as soon as I got on my motorbike, the feeling was back – I was able to find my rhythm and ride my lines,” reported Di Giannantonio. “We had good pace and a good push for a fast lap, so overall the day went well.”

It was a tight affair at the top of the timesheets. The top three – Bezzecchi, Alex and Marc Márquez – were separated by just 0.038 seconds. “We’ve seen that our rivals are ready and competitive, so our aim, as always, will be to give our best to stay right on their heels,” said Di Giannantonio, setting out the plan for the rest of the weekend.
