Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini-Ducati) back in 6th place: “A good comeback!”

Fermin Aldeguer also put in a flawless performance on Sunday at MotorLand Aragon. The Gresini Ducati rider made a thoroughly convincing return from injury, finishing in 6th place. The 21-year-old Spaniard from Murcia, who has a new MotoGP contract with Ducati in the bag, finished 17 seconds behind race dominator Marc Márquez, whom he could one day succeed at Ducati Corse.

From the middle of the race onwards, Aldeguer found himself in a sort of no-man’s-land. Up front, his compatriot and championship leader Jorge Martin was out of reach – whilst behind him, the Spaniard also had plenty of breathing space over his closest pursuer, Fabio Di Giannantonio, on the VR46 team’s Ducati GP26. “The race went well; overall, we have to be satisfied with this weekend,” Aldeguer noted. “I’d only just come back from an injury – and was competitive in all sessions – except in qualifying, where I made a few mistakes.”

“With a better starting position, I might have been a bit further up the order at the finish. Now we’ll take all the positives from the weekend with us. I think sixth place here in Aragon was a good comeback. The tyres were in quite good shape at the end. I tried to conserve the front left tyre and the rear right tyre towards the middle of the race,” explained the youngest MotoGP rider.

“I had a one-and-a-half-second lead over Diggia and a gap to Martin ahead. I then made a few mistakes. Then I saw that Diggia was pushing again. When the gap was down to just 0.9 seconds, I put the pressure on again. The pace was definitely there. I managed to set 1:47 laps towards the end. That was a good pace for me. I also felt good with the tyres in the final stages, even though the right-hand side of the front tyre was a bit of a concern in terms of the bike’s stability.”

Speaking about his physical condition after two heat races in his home country, Aldeguer said: “To be honest, I feel really good physically. It’s normal – on a track with little grip like this one, you get a bit less tired than, for example, at Misano, where one corner follows another. I now have another week to train and recover – then we’ll see how I’m feeling when I get to Misano.”

He heads to Italy in tenth place in the World Championship standings. After four races without any Spanish riders, he trails Alex Márquez by a hefty 38 points, though Márquez had performed even better in each of the races at Aragon. Still, behind the Aprilia factory team, Gresini put in the best team performance.
