Honda works rider Joan Mir after the Aragon disaster: We need to act quickly

In Aragon, Honda’s works riders Joan Mir and Luca Marini had little to celebrate. Local hero Mir finished 16th in the Sprint and 12th in the Grand Prix. Marini only managed to cross the finish line in 14th place in the main race. Instead, it was their Honda colleagues from the LCR team who made the headlines. MotoGP veteran Johann Zarco impressed on his comeback after more than three months – the Frenchman finished 9th and 15th. In the Grand Prix, he scored one point despite receiving two long-lap penalties. And rookie Diogo Moreira was the best-placed HRC rider, finishing 7th and 9th.

Joan Mir explained why he was unable to make an impact at Aragon. “The lack of performance we saw this weekend comes as no surprise. What worries me personally, though, is that I was more than ten seconds slower than last year,” mused the Spaniard. “We need to understand why I struggled so much – especially under braking. I had no advantage over the others anywhere; I had problems everywhere.”

In which areas was the RC213V worse off this time in Aragon, compared to last year? “There are a few areas. For example, under braking and going into the corners. It wasn’t good there,” Mir lamented. “Grip isn’t generally one of our strengths, but we’re usually not bad at corner entry – this weekend it was a nightmare.”

Joan Mir: “If we want to enjoy the final part of the season, we need to understand where our problems lie as quickly as possible”

After 13 race weekends in the 2026 MotoGP season, Joan Mir lies 18th with 33 points. Zarco, who had to miss six Grands Prix due to injury, is currently 17th. “If we want to enjoy the final part of the season, we need to understand where our problems lie as quickly as possible. Then we need to work out a solution. That’s my takeaway from Aragon,” emphasised the 2020 MotoGP World Champion. “If I’m not able to make the difference and can’t ride the way I’d like to, then it’s important at least to finish the races – this season I’ve had many races where I didn’t see the chequered flag. Finishing races is also very important for a rider’s confidence.”

Joan Mir has nine more MotoGP events ahead of him with Honda, after which he will take the wheel of the Ducati Desmosedici for the first time at the Valencia test on 1 December. In 2027, the Mallorcan, who celebrated his 29th birthday on 1 September, will race for Gresini Racing.
