Jorge Martin looking ahead to 2027: Marquez and Acosta – that’s going to be exciting!

Following an outstanding first half of the season for Aprilia, the Noale-based project suffered painful setbacks at Misano, of all places – the team’s second home race of the year. No fewer than two World Championship points went to the red team. Twelve months ago, a fifth place in the Grand Prix would have been a huge success for Jorge Martin following a long injury lay-off – but most recently at Misano, that fifth position marked the provisional end of Aprilia’s run of success.

Not to be forgotten, however, is that the fastest MotoGP rider at the Red Bull Ring is Jorge Martin. The competition will have to measure up against Martin’s time of 1:27.748 – set in 2024 whilst on course for the title aboard the Pramac-Ducati. Given the changeable weather conditions, it cannot be ruled out that this record will stand into 2026 – and at least into 2027, when the premier class will compete for the first time with 850cc four-cylinder engines.

The ‘Martinator’ tried to keep his review of the Misano event a few days ago brief. “The problems I had with my arm at Misano were there – but I’m feeling very good now, a few days later, and I’ll pick up the pace and try to stay at the front right to the end.”

At the press conference ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix – which was first held at the Red Bull Ring ten years ago – the Spaniard, flanked by Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta, emphasised: “I’ve nevertheless tried to take all the positives from a fifth-place finish in a Grand Prix. The fact is: the pace was there in Misano too – which will also help us in Austria.”

Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, Senna Agius was officially confirmed as the 22nd and final MotoGP rider for 2027. Assuming that Honda promotes Diogo Moreira to the HRC works team, this means that all eleven teams will have been reorganised by the start of the 850cc era. Jorge Martin was asked in Spielberg about this most unusual pairing.

The response from next year’s Yamaha factory rider (alongside Ai Ogura) was not long in coming. Martin pointed to his colleagues Acosta and Márquez, who were present: “Here, this pair! Both are exceptional and have plenty of charisma – it’s sure to be exciting to see them together in the same pit.”
