In qualifying at the Sepang International Circuit, Ducati star Marc Márquez had to let his brother Alex take the lead, and in the sprint race, KTM ace Pedro Acosta. In return, the seven-time MotoGP World Champion secured maximum points on Sunday with his 80th victory in the premier class, taking a major step towards the title.
The Ducati factory rider delivered a perfect race. Starting from second on the grid, the 33-year-old braked for the first corner alongside his brother on the inside line and entered it in the lead ahead of him. In Turn 4, the Gresini rider briefly took the lead once more, but his braking point was too late and Marc slipped back past on the inside. From that point on, there was no stopping him.
After seven laps, the championship leader was 0.7 seconds clear; after 13 laps – by which time Acosta had become his closest pursuer – the gap was 2.1 seconds; and after 20 laps, it had grown to a massive 4.1 seconds.
“I tried to stay focused and gave it my all right from the first practice session. In practice, I tried to find the limit. It was the right time to take a bit of a risk. The race went perfectly; I’m very happy,” said Márquez, commenting on the race. “I was as fast here as my brother usually is – he’s always strong at Sepang. In the first few laps, I tried to control the race – those laps are particularly important for the rear tyre. Alex probably put a bit too much strain on his because he had to defend his position. I, on the other hand, was able to build up a lead and, to be honest, I felt absolutely brilliant. My tyres held up perfectly. The race felt very long; I’m absolutely knackered.”
Helped by Jorge Martín’s (Aprilia) retirement, Márquez was able to massively extend his lead in the overall standings by 34 points to 44. With three rounds still to go, the Ducati star has already taken the first step towards winning his eighth title in Qatar.
“I won’t be changing my mindset: I’ll stay focused and keep the pressure on,” promised the Spaniard. “The title isn’t far off, but our job isn’t done yet. We don’t have many races left, but there are plenty of moments ahead, so we must continue to work with focus, as there are still so many points to be won. In Qatar and Portimão, I’ll have to keep an eye on Bezzecchi. He’s usually very strong on those tracks.”
An eighth MotoGP title would be historic, as Márquez would overtake Valentino Rossi and draw level with GP legend Giacomo Agostini!
