Marc Márquez: “That’s down to my seven shoulder operations”

Seven victories (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2024, 2025) and seven pole positions underline just what a giant Marc Marquez is on the undulating circuit in the hinterland of Alcañiz. The fact that, since his move from Honda to Ducati in 2024, he has won both Grands Prix and sprints at Aragon, dominated all practice sessions, and that the track suits the character of the Borgo Panigale bikes so well, pushes him even further into the role of favourite.

“I like the circuit; it suits my riding style,” says Marc Marquez, who heads into the weekend in fourth place in the World Championship, 40 points behind the leader Jorge Martin (Aprilia). “If I want to fight for the championship, I have to finish ahead of the others. After Sunday at Silverstone, I was a bit frustrated because I wasn’t riding to the best of my ability. But now I’m feeling confident because I was able to build up extra muscle in my arm during the second summer break. All my problems are linked to the seven different operations I’ve had on my right shoulder. I don’t feel any extra pressure today compared to the past. Last year, though, riding came more easily to me; at Silverstone on Friday and Saturday, even when I was able to give 100 per cent, I couldn’t manage better than fourth place. Things should go better here with my left arm because of the many left-hand bends, which suit my riding style. But I also want to be competitive in the races to come. If I manage that, great. If not, then we’ll just put the day and the race behind us.”

Marc completed his first laps at MotorLand in 2010 during a test on the 125cc bike. “I was quick right from the start,” grinned the seven-time MotoGP champion. “But it’s also true that my first race here ended at Turn 1. So I couldn’t win in my first year, but I’ve always enjoyed riding, regardless of the result. It’s also clear, though , that Aprilia has found something this year, because all four Aprilia riders are quick on every track. Especially on circuits with fast corners like Assen or Silverstone. Aragon has a mix of different types of corners, so we’ll see. Ultimately, I feel comfortable on my bike and know that I can fight for victory if I make the most of its potential.”
