MopedGP: Toprak, Acosta & Co enjoyed some two-stroke nostalgia with 50cc bikes

The MotoGP weekend in Spielberg didn’t kick off on Thursday with the roar of 1,000cc racing engines, but with a touch of nostalgia. When hundreds of 50cc racers took over the Red Bull Ring for the ‘MopedGP of Austria’, the circuit in Styria was shrouded in a huge cloud of two-stroke fumes. Fans of the iconic Puch, KTM and Simson mopeds didn’t let the rainy weather dampen their spirits and got the most out of their mopeds. Top speeds of just under 50 km/h were reached on the start-finish straight, whilst some mopeds or motorised mopeds – which were ‘not quite legal’ for road use – were travelling considerably faster with their riders.

Right in the thick of it: MotoGP stars Pedro Acosta, Raul Fernandez, Alex Marquez, Brad Binder, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Pol Espargaro. They had a lot of fun on the mopeds, with the odd wheelie already on display at the starting line. Toprak even got on his moped the wrong way round straight away, just to make things a bit more challenging. Austrian Moto3 rider Leo Rammerstorfer and German Rookies’ Cup rider Fynn Kratochwil didn’t want to miss out on the spectacle either and enjoyed their first appearance on the racetrack this weekend.

Austrian freestyle motocross rider Johannes Wibmer and ice speedway legend Franky Zorn also mingled with the 50cc fans. SPEEDWEEK.com was also represented by a member of staff. He managed to get the vintage Puch moped safely across the finish line, which was no mean feat.

The MopedGP in Spielberg took place for the third time this year. Two-stroke fans got their money’s worth, showcasing their beautifully restored or original mopeds – complete with creative rider outfits.

It was a successful start to the event at the Red Bull Ring. As of today, the stars of the MotoGP World Championship have once again taken control of the 4.326 km-long race track – at significantly higher speeds.
