MotoGP street circuit in Adelaide: first animations released

Whilst the MotoGP stars were battling it out for World Championship points at MotorLand Aragon, there was also news regarding one of the most exciting projects on the 2027 calendar. Detailed computer animations of the new street circuit in Adelaide were unveiled for the first time. The latest plans were unveiled by the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas.

From 2027, the Australian Grand Prix will be held in the Australian metropolis. Adelaide will thus replace Phillip Island as the venue and is set to host the first MotoGP race on a street circuit in the modern era of the World Motorcycle Championship.

Investments totalling 96 million Australian dollars are planned for the new circuit, which is equivalent to around 60 million euros. The circuit is 4.13 kilometres long and features 15 corners. Parts of the layout draw on well-known sections of Adelaide’s former Formula 1 circuit. These include, amongst others, Stag Corner, Rundle Road, Brewery Bend and Dequetteville Terrace.

The first animations give the impression of a fast and fluid circuit. After the start, the track winds through several rhythmic sections before the MotoGP riders reach the particularly fast Dequetteville Terrace. The straight is around 900 metres long and is set to become one of the most spectacular sections of the new circuit.

Speeds of up to 343 km/h on the street circuit

Speeds are set to be impressive: according to initial simulations, top speeds of up to 343 km/h are expected for the MotoGP prototypes. This means that, despite its nature as a street circuit, Adelaide is likely to rank among the fastest venues on the MotoGP calendar.

In addition to the South Australian Motor Sport Board, MotoGP, the FIM and Supercars Australia were also involved in the development of the circuit. Furthermore, two-time motorcycle world champion and current MotoGP safety advisor Loris Capirossi, as well as five-time Supercars champion Mark Skaife, contributed their expertise.

The new circuit is not intended to be used exclusively by MotoGP. Supercars, which are extremely popular in Australia, will also compete at the venue. The events will take place on different weekends in 2027. Between events, the track layout for Supercars will be adjusted in a few places, without altering the basic circuit layout.

Nevertheless, this ambitious project has not been without its critics. Ever since the announcement of the move from Phillip Island to Adelaide, the decision has been the subject of heated debate amongst Australian motorsport fans. In particular, the departure of MotoGP from the historic Phillip Island circuit – a venue beloved by both riders and fans alike – continues to cause discontent.

The new layout in Adelaide is also already the subject of intense debate on social media. Alongside the track layout, the focus is primarily on the safety requirements of a MotoGP race taking place in the heart of a major city.

There is also a political dimension to the move. Whilst the South Australian government is promoting the MotoGP as a major boon for Adelaide, the state of Victoria stands to lose one of its most internationally renowned motorsport events in Phillip Island. From 2027, a new era will begin – and not just for the MotoGP in Australia.
