Pedro Acosta on the skirmish with Aldeguer: “We messed up”

In Q2, Pedro Acosta’s best time was 1:30.640 – putting him in 7th place and securing a start from the third row. The start of the 13-lap sprint went better: after the first lap, the Spaniard was in 5th place and right on the heels of the leading quartet.

Things got exciting when Fermin Aldeguer (Ducati) stepped into the fray and began a battle with Acosta. In the end, Acosta came out on top in the tussle – but Alex Márquez (Ducati) seized the opportunity and slipped past both Acosta and Aldeguer.

According to Acosta, the duel changed the dynamics of the race for him: “Aldeguer and I messed up. That cost us a lot of time; without that duel, we’d both have been closer to Martin,” said Pedro, annoyed, though he emphasised that the battle had been fair. The time lost was measurable; during the lap of the battle, Acosta lost around one and a half seconds to the leaders. He then had to hold off Raul Fernandez (Aprilia).

As well as the battle, the choice of rear tyre also played a part: Acosta opted for the soft compound. “That made everything more difficult.” In the end, he finished seven seconds behind winner Marc Marquez.

Acosta wasn’t having a good day anyway; there was no sign of high spirits. There were reasons for this: “There were more problems all round, mainly technical issues. It’s frustrating when you try things and nothing works.” Given the circumstances, he was satisfied with P6.

Ten-second lead over Binder

The performance gaps within the brand itself remain worrying: team-mate Brad Binder, the second-best KTM rider, finished ten seconds behind Acosta in 14th place, outside the sprint points. Acosta is therefore the only KTM rider capable of pushing the manufacturer up the results tables. “When you only have a few strong points and you lose even those, it makes everything even worse. We’re working hard to find a solution, but at the moment all the KTMs have the same problem.” In the World Championship, Acosta remains sixth with 193 points.

And Sunday’s race? “Who knows if I’ll even wake up tomorrow,” joked Acosta, before turning serious: “We’re in a difficult situation because we don’t even understand why I’m having these problems.”
