Toprak Razgatlioglu: “I never overtake anyone – that’s how it goes every race”

Toprak Razgatlioglu last raced at Misano in mid-June 2025, when he won all three races in the World Superbike Championship on the factory BMW. He achieved the same feat in 2024. But now he’s racing in MotoGP – on an uncompetitive Yamaha. Even his team-mate Fabio Quartararo, a genius on the M1, only managed to finish tenth – 23.2 seconds behind winner Marc Marquez (Ducati). Rookie Toprak was 4.8 seconds behind Quartararo and finished twelfth.

“I know the track well, but that doesn’t help me because the bike and the tyres are different,” Toprak noted. “I enjoyed it more here on the Superbike because I was always at the front. Now I can’t enjoy it because the bike isn’t fast. I push hard every lap, but whatever I make up in the corners, I lose again on the straights. It’s like that every lap and I’m destroying my front tyre. That’s what my races are like – it’s tough. I never overtake anyone. I have an advantage under braking, but I can’t keep up on the straights.”

Toprak knows: qualifying needs to be much better

“I gave it my all; 12th place was the best I could manage,” added El Turco. “The pace was impressive; that surprised me. I set my fastest lap of the weekend in the race. My pace was very similar to Fabio’s, which represents a big step forward. If I were starting from 12th or 13th on the grid, it might be easy for me to make it into the top 10. But I started from the back of the grid. I struggle in qualifying because I can’t improve my lap time on the soft rear tyres. We’ll be focusing particularly on that in Austria next Friday. Perhaps I’ll manage to get 18th or 15th in qualifying then. If I start further up the grid, I’ll be able to have much better races; at Misano I had the pace for the top 10, but couldn’t get past any of my rivals.”

The three-time Superbike champion took his points tally to 18 with the four points from Misano, putting him in 21st place overall. His team-mates Alex Rins (24) and Jack Miller (28) are placed just ahead of him; only Quartararo stands out from the Yamaha quartet, sitting 15th overall with 61 points.
