Gold Cup Scarborough: Will Davey Todd make his comeback this weekend?

Last year, Davey Todd was the dominant force at the North West 200, securing three victories. At the Tourist Trophy, the Briton won the Superbike race, and at the Macau Grand Prix he came out on top against his team-mate Peter Hickman. No wonder he was tipped for further success this year at the most important road races.

But his season ended before it had really begun. Whilst practising for the Daytona 200, he crashed into the concrete barrier at high speed and sustained, amongst other things, serious leg injuries. Nevertheless, he hoped to be fit to race again in time for the North West 200. The race doctor thwarted his plans by refusing to grant him permission to race.

At the Tourist Trophy, which took place just a few weeks later, history repeated itself. He was certain he would once again be able to ride a motorbike at racing pace around the physically demanding Snaefell Mountain Course, but here too, the race doctor ruled him unfit to compete. A favourite had, of necessity, become a spectator.

Now Todd is making a fresh attempt. He is hoping to make his comeback at the Gold Cup meeting at Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough this coming weekend (5 and 6 September). Should he be granted permission to race, he would face a strong field of competitors including Hickman, Shaun Anderson, Rob Hodson, Mike Browne and Richard Cooper.
